Cathedral of Pécs
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is one of the most beautiful and unique buildings in Pécs. Its four towers and beautiful interior impress every visitor. It is no coincidence that when it was consecrated in 1891, the newspapers of the time wrote about it: “Whoever wants to see heaven, come to Pécs!” It gained its current form as a result of the 19th century reconstruction, but even after being rebuilt, it preserved the charm of the medieval cathedral.
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is a unique building. When the church was consecrated in 1891 in the presence of the country’s bishops and the Apostolic King Franz Joseph I, in a splendid ceremony, the Budapest newspapers wrote: “Whoever wants to see heaven, come to Pécs!” It acquired its current form as a result of the 19th-century reconstruction, but even after being rebuilt, it preserved the charm of the medieval cathedral. Upon entering, a huge interior space divided in two by a triumphal arch is revealed, the effect of which is enhanced by the tented main altar.
The choir houses a four-manual organ with 6,101 pipes, a creation of the former Angster Organ Factory in Pécs. The Heart of Jesus and Corpus Christi chapels are decorated with murals by Károly Lotz. The world-famous murals of Bertalan Székely can be seen in the Mary Chapel and the chapel named after Bishop St. Mor. The 12th-century, large-scale, in the cross-vaulted, five-nave crypt, the remains of Janus Pannonius, bishop of Pécs and humanist, were found and reburied during archaeological excavations. A statue was erected in his honor there.
