The Downtown Candlemas Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Dzsámi)
The Downtown Candlemas Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the city center is the unique monument of the Turkish era in our country, the most significant work of Turkish-Islamic architecture in Hungary. The greenish-yellow lights shining through the beehive-shaped windows with horseshoe arches illuminate the interior of the church.
The iconic building on Széchenyi Square, the Gázi Kászim Pasha Mosque, is one of the most defining sights of Pécs, the largest intact monument of the Turkish era in the Carpathian Basin, which was at the forefront of architecture of its time. Today, it no longer has a minaret, but it is still unique. Its interior is illuminated by greenish-yellow lights through the beehive-shaped windows with donkey-back arches. The beautifully decorated prayer niche, the mihrab, oriented towards Mecca, can be admired, and on some parts of the walls we can discover calligraphic lines from the Quran.
In the vicinity of the sacristy and the Saint Mor chapel, you can also see the pools used in the former bath of Gázi Kászim Pasha. The visitor can wander through the enchanting place where East and West meet, the sacred spaces where various religions interact with each other, with the help of modern tools, exciting interactive elements, and animations. Thus, in the church, which is considered a symbol of Pécs, we can get to know the external appearance and history of the building, which has taken different forms in different eras.
