Bishop’s Treasure

For centuries, only the privileged could see the unique works of art that the Episcopal Collection of the Diocese of Pécs now presents to the public. The selected exhibition encompasses the entire palette of fine arts: from paintings and graphics to fine goldsmiths to rare coins and sculptures, it organizes the most valuable pieces of this historical heritage.

Originally built as a canonical residence, an unparalleled collection awaits visitors within the walls of the ornate palace. The exhibition also pays tribute to the city’s renowned patron bishop, György Klimó – to whom we can thank the country’s first public library – but the portraits of many former archpastors of Pécs also come to life on the walls.

The special gems of the exhibition are the pieces of the significant Roman-era coin collection and the sumptuous Baroque furniture. Among the paintings, the monumental series of paintings by Austrian artist Karl Atzger, which once decorated the interior of the cathedral, stands out, but the collection also includes notable works by Bertalan Székely and Lajos Kubányi.
