Located in the heart of Pécs, next to the Cathedral, the Magtár Visitor Center occupies a former 18th-century granary originally used for storing grain. Today, the four-story building serves multiplepurposes: it functions as a tourist information center, hosts conferences and community events, and provides an ideal venue for high-quality catering and wine tastings.
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is one of the most remarkable landmarks in Pécs. When the church was consecrated in 1891 in the presence of the country’s bishops and Apostolic King Franz Joseph I, contemporary newspapers in Budapest wrote: “Whoever wishes to see heaven should come to Pécs.” Although the cathedral acquired its present appearance during the 19th-century reconstruction, it has preserved the atmosphere and charm of its medieval origins.
Originally built in the 12th century, the Bishop’s Palace offers visitors a glimpse into the private study rooms and salons of bishops from different historical periods. The interiors feature richly decorated Baroque, Biedermeier, Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque furniture, paintings and furnishings that reflect centuries of episcopal life. Highlights of the collection include late 17th-century tapestries donated by Maria Theresa, monumental 18th-century oil paintings and portraits of former bishops.
Only a small number of medieval and Renaissance monuments have survived intact in Hungary. The Cathedral Lapidarium in Pécs presents one of the country’s most significant collections of medieval stone carvings through the sculptural remains of the Cathedral. The collection reflects the various construction periods of the church, with a particular emphasis on the Romanesque era, when the building acquired much of its present form.

Located next to the Diocesan Library near Pécs Cathedral, the beautifully renovated Rózsakert was reopened to the public on 20 August 2022 by Bishop of Pécs László Felföldi. The gift shop offers a carefully selected range of quality products, with a special focus on local handicrafts and unique souvenirs.
Officially named the Downtown Candlemas Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this iconic building in the city centre is one of Hungary’s most important surviving monuments from the Ottoman era and the country’s finest example of Turkish-Islamic architecture. Soft greenish-yellow light filters through the beehive-patterned windows and distinctive horseshoe arches, creating a unique atmosphere inside the church.

Since opening in 2015, the tourist attractions of the Bishopric of Pécs have become some of the city’s most popular destinations. Thousands of visitors have explored the beautifully restored buildings and the unique treasures they contain. Annual visitor numbers regularly exceeded one hundred thousand before the Covid pandemic temporarily interrupted tourism. Since then, travellers have returned to Pécs in large numbers, and the sites of the Bishopric once again feature on nearly every visitor’s itinerary. As a result, the total number of visitors surpassed one million in the summer of 2024 — an occasion celebrated with a special prize draw.
The winner received an exclusive private guided tour. In the Cathedral’s 60-metre-high southeast tower, which also serves as a lookout point, she was welcomed with champagne by the bishopric staff and enjoyed a private organ performance from the gallery. According to the visitor from Sárvár, however, the highlight of the experience was the opportunity to play the organ herself. In addition to discovering the hidden secrets of the Cathedral, the winner also received a redeemable prize package, including a gastronomic and cultural weekend in Pécs.

What We Are Proud Of: Prima Primissima Award 2018
At the 2018 Baranya County Prima Awards ceremony, not only the county’s cultural and scientific excellence was recognised, but also the winner of a newly established category. The Diocese of Pécs received the award for Outstanding Social Contribution. The recognition, granted by the Baranya County Organisation of VOSZ, honoured the Diocese’s exemplary tourism development activities. With the support of the European Union, the Diocese of Pécs carried out large-scale tourism investments in three locations — the historic centre of Pécs, the Marian shrine of Máriagyűd and Püspökszentlászló — all completed in 2015.
As a result of these developments, an independent tourism organisation was established to oversee every aspect of presenting the Church’s cultural heritage, from visitor services and programme organisation to accommodation management. The offer of the Bishopric of Pécs has been expanded with guided tours, wine tastings, museum education programmes and branded souvenirs, while also playing an important role in supporting the local economy and tourism workforce development. Thanks to the renewed tourism system, visitor numbers have doubled, and a modern network of religious, cultural and tourism institutions has emerged that presents the values of the Diocese of Pécs in a worthy and contemporary way.
