Cathedral Lapidarium Gallery
Few medieval and Renaissance monuments have remained intact in our country. The Cathedral Lapidarium Gallery in Pécs presents the most significant Hungarian sculptural ensemble of this period through the carvings of the Cathedral.
Entering the stone gallery, the walls of the medieval cathedral almost come to life. The lapidary faithfully preserves the architectural periods of the church, with particular attention to the Romanesque period, which also determined the foundations of the building’s current appearance. The exhibition not only reveals the richness and beauty of the former church interior, but also provides a key to understanding the large-scale reconstruction of the 19th century, illuminating the aesthetic and theological principles that guided the era.
