RÓZSAKERT BISZTRÓ & PARK
Located near the Pécs Cathedral, next to the Pécs Diocesan Library, the completely renovated and beautified Rózsakert was opened to the public on August 20, 2022 by the Bishop of Pécs, László Felföldi.
What is worth knowing about the past of Rózsakert?
Although its roots date back to the late Roman era, in the memories of the people of Pécs, the location primarily evokes the former Rózsakert Vendéglő. This popular, downtown summer entertainment venue was a defining scene of the city’s social life between 1954 and 2010.
The fate of the garden in the decades after World War II
The Rózsakert Restaurant operating in the garden was one of the city’s favorite spots until 2010, and the legendary “Papucs wine bar” operated in the building below the garden. The area underwent a complete renovation in the early 2020s: an English park evoking the original atmosphere of the garden was created in the place of the old restaurant. During the reconstruction, the interior floor plan of the late Roman cella trichora (late Roman cella trichora (a three-apsed funerary chapel)) located in the area was also made visible, reminding visitors of the thousand-year history of the place.
The Rózsakert today
The plant species planted in the garden were selected strictly based on historical documentation, so the tree peony, the hollyhock, the rose honeysuckle and the ball rose also found a place in the area. The Rózsakert Bistro awaits its guests from spring to autumn, embraced by flowering bushes, with refreshments, delicacies and cultured entertainment.
