Bishop’s Palace
The halls of the bishop’s residence, the study, salons and bedroom are not only a collection of valuable furniture and home to rare works of art, but also the site of many significant historical events.
Within the walls of the building, built on 12th-century foundations, the bishop’s study and salons, reflecting the style of the centuries, await visitors. The daily life of former archbishops comes to life among the uniquely decorated Baroque, Biedermeier and Neo-Renaissance furniture and paintings.
The special jewels of the interiors are the late 17th-century tapestries donated by Maria Theresa, as well as the imposing 18th-century oil paintings and bishop portraits that decorate the rooms. At the end of the guided tour, visitors can also immerse themselves in the ornamental garden belonging to the palace, where, in addition to fountains fed by spring water, Zsolnay-ceramics and Mediterranean and tropical plant specialties complete the experience.
Texas Bar
The roots of the corridor system connecting the garden of the Bishop’s Palace with the Cellar and the Granary date back to the Middle Ages. However, this underground passage gained a truly special significance in the second half of the 20th century, during the during the anti-church socialist regime. The western wing of the cellar tunnel was no longer used only for storing wine: it became a safe haven and a secret route during the years when the residence and garden were covered with eavesdropping devices. The patinated walls today serve as an unusual setting for presenting the disastrous everyday life of the communist persecution of the church.
Bishop’s Cellar
The 18th century, patinated wine cellar was once an integral part of the bishop’s residence, known as the “main cellar” of the manor. In the monumental, two-story halls extending deep into the ground, visitors can admire the original barrels up close, while they can recall the atmosphere of the past by tasting noble wines.
